We will remember them...

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them."

Freemasonry in general and Lodge Elgin specifically have always honored the memory of members who have passed on to greater service. Below are the most recent member obituaries observed by the Lodge.

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning. We will remember them!"

BRO. THE HON. CLARENCE NELSON HON. DGSW, PM

He was a man of fine character, of forthright intellect, faithful and true in all the fellowships of life, respected as much as an ordinary Citizen as he was as the First Citizen of St. James, beloved as a friend, honored as a Mason; and if we were asked to sum up his long life in a single phrase it would not be hard to find—“the search for truth and the service of mankind.”

A noble and true man, kindly and brotherly, he will be missed in the gracious circle which he adorned, and his name will be spoken with reverence and gratitude wherever Masons meet upon the Level and part upon the Square.

Bro. Clarence Nelson was initiated into Freemasonry when he took his vows as an Entered Apprentice on February 4, 1976. He was passed to the Fellow Craft degree on March 3, 1976 and was raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason on May 5, 1976. He was advanced to the Mark Degree on October 6, 1976 and became the Right Worshipful Master of Lodge Elgin in 1983. His commitment to Freemasonry saw him gaining membership in the Elgin Royal Arch Chapter and he became the First Principal of that Chapter in 1988.

Bro. Clarence was a devoted Freemason who was outstanding in the area of the Lodge’s Ritual work. This is not surprising as he had an unmatched love affair with the Queen’s English and took great pride in speaking it well. He was a Mason’s Mason and inspired many young Freemasons along their journey.

Bro. Clarence continued to give tireless service to his Lodge up to the point where ill health prevented him from attending.

His outstanding contribution to Freemasonry was recognized by The District Grand Lodge of Jamaica when in 1985 he was elected to serve as the District Senior Grand Warden of the DGL of Jamaica. He was later conferred the Honorary Rank of District Senior Grand Warden.

With his passing to the Grand Lodge Above, Lodge Elgin has lost a faithful member, a resplendent gentleman and a noble friend and brother. On behalf of the RWM we extend to his wife and family our heartfelt condolences.

May The Great Architect of The Universe grant him Eternal rest and peace at the last forever.

Few names are more widely known in our Fraternity, and fewer more highly honored, than that of Bro. The Honourable Clarence D. Nelson, whose death at the mellow age of eighty-three takes from us a man distinguished alike in Nation Building and in Masonry, as indefatigable in his studentship as he was tireless in benevolence.
